WITS END KNOWLEDGE CENTER / INSIDE THE AXLE

Ring & pinion.
The details matter.

Explore how a ring and pinion work—and why the details of their setup matter.

WHY IT MATTERS

One assembly. Several different jobs.

Depth locates the pinion.

Backlash is tooth clearance.

Preload loads the bearings.

Pattern shows tooth contact.

These settings work together. Evaluating the whole setup helps support quiet operation and long service life.

About these illustrations & technical references

This is an interactive explanation, not a setup specification or installation procedure. Tooth shapes, clearances, bearing movement and perspective are simplified or exaggerated. The motion view uses a 41-tooth ring gear and 10-tooth pinion: the turn-count relationship is calculated, but the drawing is not a tooth-meshing simulation. It does not model load, deflection, lubrication, heat or actual contact stress.

Contact marks are illustrative, not a diagnostic chart. Gear design, drive/coast surface, wear and checking conditions affect what you see. Use the applicable axle and gear manufacturer’s information for an actual vehicle.
